The birth of Charlie | San Diego Birth Photographer

Every now and then I meet someone, and I immediately know I was meant to be their birth photographer! That’s what happened with Nikki, who wasn’t even looking for a birth photographer, but came across my information in a Moms group. Since this was her 5th and final pregnancy, she reached out to me, we met, clicked right away, and I couldn’t wait to photograph her birth story.

Nikki had told me how her previous pregnancies had progressed, and this one was no different. A few days of light cramping, leading up to ‘the real deal’ on May 3rd, 2014. This also happened to be her 3rd child (Billy’s) 4th Birthday, but #5 made the wise decision to have his own Birthday the day after. Charlie was born May 4th (may the fourth be with you, always..!) at 3.18am.

Nikki had labored at her oldest son’s baseball game in the morning, at home, at the beach, back at home, to the hospital, then was told to go walk for 2 hours – at 11 o’clock at night!, but instead we slept in our cars for 2 hours, and finally back in the hospital at 1am. Nikki’s veins decided to not cooperate, and it took 2 nurses over an hour to place an IV in her arm. At this point her contractions had started to space out again, and the Doctor asked for permission to rupture her membranes. He did just that, at 2.35am. Nikki had not been kidding when she’d told me once her water breaks, it’s down to business! Charlie was born at 3.18am, but needed a little help after he was born so quickly, and when he was finally back in his Mama’s arms, he latched on beautifully!

As I was driving home, I was able to witness the sun rise, something I hadn’t done in a very long time.
Thank you, Nikki and Tom, for allowing me to witness your family’s love, your love for each other, and for being your most beautiful and raw, Nikki, while giving birth to your Charlie!
