Yearly Archives: 2011

3 weeks earlier, I had documented Magnolia’s arrival, and her Mama, Charlotte, told me she wanted nobody else  but me to photograph Joe’s homecoming! So, at 3 weeks old, Magnolia got to meet her Daddy, and their family was finally reunited! I had never shot a homecoming before so this was very new to me. Luckily, since Magnolia had been born during Joe’s absence, he was able to be one of the first few off the boat, in fact he was #4. Their reunion was very emotional for me too, and I hadn’t realized that this had been his very first deployment.

Thank you, Charlotte and Joe, for allowing me to be part of this incredible experience!

At our first meeting, we got along like old friends! Charlotte contacted me after finding out about me on a local FB group for photographers. She and her family had just moved to San Diego from the East Coast, and she knew her husband would most like be deployed during the last few weeks of her pregnancy. Charlotte is a photographer, too, so she understands the importance of documenting such an important event. Her best friend, Mandy, was going to the stand-in husband, and even wear the infamous orange pajama pants!

Thanksgiving came – and went. Late Saturday afternoon, on the November 27th and at this point a week overdue, I got the call to let me know they were headed to the hospital to have Magnolia’s heartbeat checked to make sure she was doing ok. Well, they decided to keep her in and induce her. Charlotte managed to hold out on the epidural, but during transition decided she wanted it after all. For reasons I won’t go in to now, she ended up delivering all natural, and Magnolia was born fast and strong, in fact so fast that if I hadn’t been standing where I was, I would’ve missed it! Soon after she was born, we were able to get Daddy on Skype, and he got to meet his brand new daughter. I can’t even imagine how Charlotte felt, but I was really emotional….

Here’s Charlotte and Baby M’s birth story…

I first met Stephanie and Josh at the Best Start Birth Center in September, while attending the monthly ‘Friday Night Doulas’ (FND) meeting. They had decided to come and meet some people and maybe learn a thing or two about birth. After talking with them for a little while, they seemed eager to have their son’s birth documented, and so we arranged for me to do just that.

I kept in touch with Stephanie for the rest of her pregnancy by phone, and she let me know right away when things were happening. At 5am on October 24th, I received the call to let me know they were headed to the Birth Center. After arriving there and getting checked, it turned out she was already dilated to 6-7 cm, which in turn I learned from another call. I was already up and ready, I hadn’t been able to get back to sleep after the 5am call… So, I headed in and arrived about 20 minutes later (around 6.35am). I found her laying in the tub, and looking as calm as could be. I introduced myself to the Midwife, Vanessa, and went about documenting Stephanie and Josh’s journey to parenthood. She started to push around 8.15am, and delivered a beautiful baby boy at 10.23am.

This journey will stay with me forever for several reasons. It was my first time experiencing a Birth Center delivery, first time water birth, and Stephanie’s calmness will always inspire me – she was amazing!!!!! Witnessing her journey had a profound effect on me, and I (almost) wish I could go back and have my kids all over again!

THANK YOU, Stephanie and Josh, for trusting me to document this life altering journey for you!
